Sealants

Sealants

Sealants are a common preventive treatment in dentistry. Although brushing and flossing are the best ways to prevent cavities, some teeth have fine grooves or pits that accumulate plaque, not because the person doesn't brush, but because the grooves are too narrow to allow even one bristle into them. The more difficult teeth to brush are the one at the back of your teeth called molars, these teeth are where food leftovers are more common to reside and cause plaque. When plaque accumulates, it can lead to cavities and other types of tooth decay. The cavity producing bacteria that exist in our mouths may come in contact with leftover food and this may cause holes in teeth, this is why we use sealants. To apply sealants, a plastic material is brushed onto the tooth, filling these narrow grooves and preventing the cavity-causing buildup. Sealants make healthy teeth possible.
